About

Learning has always been my passion—I want to know everything! This probably explains a lot about me, including the questionable amount of time I spent getting degrees. It certainly explains the satisfaction I get in being a UX designer, since asking and answering “why,” “what,” and “how,” is the core of what I do. Currently, I’m the manager of UX design at FMX, I where lead design efforts on our SaaS web app—a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).

Design Experience

I was hired as FMX’s first UX designer in fall 2019 with the goal of improving the UX of the product and increasing the UX maturity of the company. Since it was also my first UX job, it was a real trial by fire. I built a design process from the ground up while addressing an enormous design backlog and advocating for UX within my team and the company.

As an individual contributor, I’ve worked on projects great and small—from improving the usability of error messages and filter menus to designing complex new features that involve the core business logic of the product and include innovative UIs. I’ve followed the philosophy of “just enough” research, design, and iteration to produce confidence that I’ve identified the user pains correctly and designed effective solutions.

Now I’m building the design team while maturing our processes, including driving consistent use of user research, usability testing, and success criteria to ensure we’re using our design and development resources efficiently. I still get to enjoy problem solving, creativity, and detailed design work as an individual contributor, but I also help define our product strategy, drive cross-team collaboration, and motivate and support my team.

Prior Experience

My professional journey has been shaped by a life-long love of learning, insatiable curiosity, and desire to help others learn, grow, and achieve. Before moving into UX, I earned a PhD in history and worked in college publishing. My interest in UX was sparked by my experiences developing content for an elearning platform—both the platform itself and the tools we used to create and test the content had some notable usability issues. I started exploring usability and instructional design and applying what I was learning to my content development, especially when developing interactive elements.

This background has enhanced my skills as a UX designer in a number of ways:

As a historian, I developed expertise in using critical thinking to analyze potentially biased data and understand the mindset of people very different from me that I now apply to conducting user research, analyzing research data, and developing personas.

I am confident communicating my design decisions because of my experience as an educator, which honed my public presentation skills and my ability to distill complex ideas and present them in a way that is most effective for a given audience.

As a project manager and then development editor for an online learning platform, I gained invaluable experience working with cross-functional teams, balancing the needs of a wide variety of stakeholders, and working creatively and effectively within constraints defined by clients or based on technical/platform capabilities.
